Military Stipends for Children

Q: My husband is active duty, E-4. I have heard from other military wives that when you have kids, you only get an extra $20 a month for each child. But my husband tells me you really get $2000 a month for each child. All of the military pay charts I've seen don't mention the number of dependents. Could you inform me of how much more he will make if we decide to have kids?

A: The military has a host of special incentives -- however there is not a $2,000 per month per child program! I am not aware of any program or pay that increases based on children. However, Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is paid with or without dependents. If you are married without children or married with children, you receive the same "with dependents rate," which incidentally, for your husband is about $330 per month more than the "without dependents" rate in San Diego. There are a lot of good reasons to have kids, but an extra stipend is not one of them!
